February 24, 2022. In Ukraine, daily life unfolded like any other day—until the first bombings hit. That day marked the beginning of a war that forced many to flee the country, others to take up arms, and nearly everyone to endure separation, fear, shortages of essential goods, and loss.
The documentary Wartime Notes (2023, Ukrainian with English subtitles) tells the story of director Barbara Cupisti’s journey to the geographic and emotional heart of this conflict. From Warsaw, Cupisti traveled through the cities of Lviv and Odessa, the forgotten countryside of Ukraine, and on to Kyiv, Irpin, Bucha, and Borodyanka. The film recounts the stories of those who crossed borders to survive or to support the resistance, and of those who stayed to keep fighting for their country.
The screening of the film took place on September 23 at 7:00 PM at UNESCO Headquarters (entrance: 124 Avenue de Suffren, 75007 Paris), in Room I. The event was introduced by Ambassador Liborio Stellino, Permanent Representative of Italy to UNESCO, and included remarks by Nicola Claudio, President of RAI Cinema.
