In the framework of the recently concluded 219th session of the UNESCO Executive Board, on Italy’s initiative, a Decision was adopted on the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), which will take place next November.
Founded in 1964 in Trieste by Nobel Prize laureate in Physics Abdus Salam, the ICTP is the only UNESCO Category I institute in the field of Natural Sciences. The centre is run jointly by UNESCO, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Italy.
The ICTP is particularly active in supporting the scientific research of scientists from developing countries, promoting high-level research programmes also in topical areas such as the development of quantum computers and artificial intelligence.
To launch the celebrations of ICTP’s 60th anniversary and on the occasion of the Italian Research Day, UNESCO will host a dissemination event on the Centre’s activities on 10 April. The keynote speaker of the day will be Serge Haroche, Nobel Prize winner for Physics in 2012. During the event, a panel discussion will take place on ‘Enhancing global scientific collaboration: The impact of the ICTP in advancing science and research’. Finally, the event will be an opportunity to hear the voices of ICTP alumni.
The event is open to the public and can also be followed online. Please register at the following links:
