Italy’s Vice-Ministre for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Emanuela Del Re, participated in the UNESCO International Water Conference. The Vice-Minister intervened in the panel on promoting a gender-based approch to water security. She underlined the need to have a strong focus on women and girls while promoting the right to water.

“Water – she declared – is a key element for the implementation of all ODDs, inlcuding health. Diarrhea is the second main cause of death among children under 5. This plea could be solved if all governements and populations decided to take strong measures to avoid the trasmission of illnesses. For this reason, Italy proposes the creation of a « World Day Against Child Diarrhea » in the framework of the 72nd World Health Assembly in Geneva – announced the Vice-Minister.

During the day, the Vice-Minister also took part in the launching event of the project “Empowering Young People in Africa through Media and Communication », which will be implemented by UNESCO thanks to 3 million euros from Italy’s « Africa Fund ». This is one of the numerous initiatives that Italy is implementing in Africa in order to foster awareness about the risks of migrations – underlined the Vice-Ministre. Our strategy aims at curbing this problem at its roots while providing assistance to migrants and refugees, facilitating their returns and promoting the societal and economic development of the concerned countries.”
