UNESCO’s Executive Board unanimously approved Italy’s proposal of Appeal for the safeguarding of cultural heritage in crisis zones. The Appeal will be launched by the Organization’s 195 Member States during the next General Conference, in the framework of the Culture Commission, which will be chaired by Italy. This initiative has two purposes :
a) underline the relevance of the path initiated in 2015 by UNESCO upon Italy’s « Culture Blue Helmets » initiative, which led to the adoption of the historical 2347 Resolution by the Security Council of the United Nations a few months ago;
b) make sure that the protection of cultural heritage stays a priority of the new Director-General which will be elected in the October session of the Executive Board.
