221st session of the UNESCO Executive Board

The 221st session of the Executive Board of UNESCO opened today. Composed of 58 Member States, including Italy, the Executive Board meets twice a year and is the main policy-making body of the Organization.

The Permanent Delegate of Italy to UNESCO, Ambassador Liborio Stellino, will chair the Programme and External Relations Commission (PX), which is responsible for deciding upon key issues on the international agenda. Over the next few days, it will focus on UNESCO’s action in areas such as Ukraine, Gaza and Lebanon.

On Wednesday 9 April, the three candidates for the position of UNESCO Director-General – Khaled El Enany, former Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt, Gabriela Ramos, UNESCO Deputy Director-General for Social and Human Sciences and Firmin Edouard Matoko, UNESCO Deputy Director-General for Priority Africa and External Relations – will present their programs to the Executive Board Members, ahead of the elections which will take place in October 2025.

On the same day, renowned Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto will be hosted at UNESCO for the inauguration of Love Difference, an artwork which he created specifically for UNESCO and he will donate to the Organization’s rich art collection.
