In a global context where multilateralism is increasingly being questioned, it is vital to explain to younger generations the role of UNESCO in protecting cultural heritage, safeguarding freedom of the press and scientific research, and promoting education as a driver of peace.

These were among the main topics discussed during today’s meeting at UNESCO between Ambassador Liborio Stellino, Italy’s Permanent Representative to the Paris-based organization, and a delegation of university students from the Student Movement for the International Organization (MSOI) of Turin. The visit formed part of a study trip aimed at gaining a better understanding of how major multilateral organizations operate and at raising awareness among young members about career opportunities in the international arena. The Ambassador outlined Italy’s role within UNESCO, focusing in particular on the protection of cultural and natural heritage, including in crisis situations, as well as on the delicate task of shaping shared ethical standards for the development of artificial intelligence and neurotechnologies, and on ongoing efforts to combat disinformation. An overview was also provided of multilateral negotiation dynamics and of the organization’s main programmatic priorities, following a recent leadership transition marked by the election of the new Director General, former Egyptian Minister of Antiquities and Tourism Khaled El Enany. Considerable time was devoted to an open exchange with the students, who asked about career prospects within the United Nations system, the skills required for a diplomatic career, and the ways in which young people can make a meaningful contribution to strengthening effective, results-oriented multilateralism. The meeting offered a valuable opportunity for direct dialogue between institutions and young people, reaffirming the commitment of Italy’s Permanent Representation to UNESCO to support training and outreach initiatives aimed at bringing Italian students closer to the world of international organizations.

“UNESCO’s founding ambition, to build the defenses of peace in the minds of men and women, remains, eighty years after its creation, an urgent necessity for the international community. Helping younger generations understand the spirit and mandate of this global agency, whose mission is to maximize the positive impact of culture, science, and education on today’s society, is therefore essential for a country like Italy, which bases its international engagement on these very principles,” Ambassador Stellino said during the discussion with the students.
