UNESCO: “Revive the Spirit of Mosul” – Italy Announces a 2 Million Euro Contribution

During today’s international conference « Revive the Spirit of Mosul » held at UNESCO, Italy’s Permanent Delegate, Amb. Vincenza Lomonaco, and the Deputy Director-General of the Agency for Cooperation to Development, Luca Maestripieri, announced a 2 million euro contribution to finance reconstruction projects for the cultural heritage and education system of Mosul.

The latter, which is the capital of the Nineveh region and the ancient centre of the Assyrian civilization, is the symbol of the challenges posed by the peaceful cohabitation of different religions and communities in the Middle East. The « Revive the Spirit of Mosul » initiative was launched by UNESCO last April with the aim of recovering and protecting the cultural, educational and social heritage of the city, which was severely damaged during conflicts with Daesh.

Italy has already promoted several successful initiatives in favor of the Iraqi cultural heritage, namely thanks to the work of the Carabinieri TPC in the field of reconstructing the archeological museum of Bagdad and training sector workers; the reconstruction of the Nimrud Bull, which will be donated to the Iraqi people, and the 100 million financing for the securing of the Mosul dam.

“With our support to this initiative, we wish to give a concrete contribution to the efforts of the Iraqi people for the reconstruction of the extraordinary tangible heritage of Mosul and the cultural exchange spirit it has always stood for”, declared Italy’s Permanent Delegate, Amb. Vincenza Lomonaco.
