Italy had the opportunity to present its brand new coordination center during the “National initiatives on the safety of journalists – what works?” roundtable which was organized by UNESCO in the framework of its work to foster freedom of expression and security of journalists. The latter, which has just been established by its Ministry of Interior, is entirely devoted to collecting information and promoting analysis concerning intimidations against journalists. This good practice was welcomed by the Secretariat and the attending permanent Delegations.
The event took place during the celebrations of the International Day of Human Rights. It represents an operation follow back to Resolution 39C/61 (“Strengthening UNESCO leadership in the implementation of the UN Action Plan an Safety of Journalists and the issue of impunity”) which was adopted during the latest General Conference. The latter encourages Member States to establish ad-hoc national mechanisms to protect journalists and punish perpetrators.
