« Ice Memory » is an international programme which aims to create a climate archive in order to save the « memory » of the world’s glaciers from deteriorations dues to global warming.
The project was launched in 2015, thanks to the collaboration between the Italian National Centre for Research (CNR), the Ca’ Foscari University in Venice and the Grenoble Alpes University. Its purpose is to create a world archive of glacier ice samples to be stored in a safe place like Antarctica where it will be preserved for future generations to study. Scientists have discovered that ice contains precious information about temperature, rain, wind, aridity etc. but can also provide invaluable insight on the cultural environment where our predecessors lived in certain areas of the globe.
The Ice Memory project is the fruit of the collaboration of scientists coming from France, Italy, Russia, the USA, Austria, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Germany, Japan, Sweden and Switzerland.
A draft proposal to further implicate UNESCO in this project is up for discussion during the Organization’s 202nd Executive Board (4-18 October 2017).
