For the first time after ten years, Italy has been reelected to the Executive Council of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) on June 28, during the 29th Assembly of the IOC.
The IOC was founded in 1960 and possesses a functional autonomy inside UNESCO. It is the only UN body which deals with marine research. It is composed of 148 Member States and is responsible for promoting international cooperation and coordination in the field of oceanography, in order to improve the management, sustainable development and protection of marine eco-systems. Its Executive Council is composed of 40 Member states elected for a 2-year term, representing each one of the 5 electoral groups.
Italy will be represented at the Executive Council by the President of the Italian Oceanographic Commission, Rosalia Santoleri.
In the framework of IOC’s regional tsunami coordination activities, the Italian tsunami alert center of the National Institute for geophysics and Volcanology INGV) was named « Tsunami Service Provider for the Mediterranean » during a ceremony which took place in the presence of representatives of the INGV and of the Italian civil defense department, as national focus points.
