UNESCO – European Heritage Days: the Carabinieri TPC at #UNESCOHeritageLab”

The #UNESCOHeritageLab event was organized by UNESCO during the European Heritage Days (15-16 September 2018) in order to present technological innovations applied to heritage conservation and restauration.

The Carabinieri Department for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (TPC) was invited to set up a stand in order to illustrate to the estimated 11,500 visitors its work in the field of the fight against the illicit traffic of cultural heritage and technological innovation.

The Carabinieri “iTPC” application was namely very appreciated by the public. It allows smartphones and tablet users to access part of the TPC Database for Stolen Cultural Properties in order to verify the lawfulness of a work of art by comparing pictures.

During her visit to the Carabinieri stand, UNESCO’s Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, expressed her appreciation for this technology which helps raise the awareness of the young generations against the purchase of uncertain or stolen works of art, by using a language of their time.
