On July 24 2018, the General Commander of the Carabinieri Corps, Gen. Giovanni Nistri, met with UNESCO’s Director General, Audrey Azoulay.
The Director General expressed her full appreciation for Carabinieri’s excellent work in international crises zones, namely Iraq. She expressed the wish for joint operations to be carried out in the next future in those countries whose cultural heritage is at risk due to natural disasters or conflicts.
In this framework, she has namely referred to UNESCO’s cooperation with the Carabinieri Department for the Protection of Cultural Heritage for the implementation of the Conventions for the safeguarding of cultural property in the event of armed conflict (1954), for the fight against illicit cultural trafficking (1970) and for the protection of underwater cultural heritage (2001).
