UNESCO approves resolution condemning the situation in Syria

UNESCO’s Executive Board approved today a resolution condemning the situation in Syria.

The document underlines “the continued widespread and systematic violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms by the Syrian authorities”.

It urges the Syrian government to stop such violations immediately and to protect its people. UNESCO particularly refers to its field of action – protection of schools, students, teachers, journalists and freedom of the press – where widespread violations are underway as well.

The resolution was promoted by EU member states together with the Arab group, with 35 votes in favour, 8 contrary and 14 abstentions.
