Italy’s statement at the 187th ExB on the admission of Palestine
Italy has always advocated the European unity on the issue of Palestinian statehood and will continue to do so.

Today Italy has decided to abstain on the Palestinian Authority request of admission to UNESCO feeling that such initiative could further complicate the process aimed at restarting negotiations between the parties, started in New York by the Quartet declaration of September 23, and pending a Security Council decision on the Palestinian request of admission to the United Nations.

On the other hand, Italy has decided not to oppose the application in recognition of the achievements of the Palestinian Authority in preparing institutions for statehood, as highlighted in reports to the Ad-hoc Liaison Committee, which according to the mentioned Quartet declaration, would allow additional steps that can actively support towards Palestinian statehood.

In this regard, Italy hopes that these further steps, aimed at establishing the trust necessary for the negotiations, be in line with Quartet recommendations, aiming at a prompt resumption of meetings between the parties.
