Welcome message

Dear visitors,

welcome to the new website of the Italian permanent Delegation to UNESCO.

This latest update wishes to respond to the numerous inquiries we receive concerning Italy’s work at UNESCO; the initiatives that have been carried out by the Italian Government in the framework of the “blue helmets for culture”; Italian natural and cultural sites inscribed in the World Heritage List; programs and projects in Italian cities, regions and rural areas; the Organization’s activities in the fields of sciences and education.

We have strived to provide answers and to shed light on the multi-faceted mandate of UNESCO - the UN organization for culture, education and science which is mostly known in Italy for our country’s record number of sites inscribed on the World Heritage List. "Not only sites” is therefore the slogan we have chosen for this virtual tour at the heart of the activities that are carried out by this international Organization which is also described as the “United Nations’ conscience” for the high purposes that are inscribed in the preamble of its constitution: pursuing peace and cooperation among peoples and nations by using culture as an instrument for dialogue, confrontation and respect for diversity.

Thanks to its traditions, history and culture, Italy plays a key role in the Organization’s cultural diplomacy. "Italy is a culture and beauty superpower”. This phrase is not a slogan or a catchphrase; it sums up how Italy is perceived by most countries. It summarizes the underlying aspects of our national identity - together with, I would add, Italy’s extraordinary capacity for dialogue and negotiation that stems from our unique identity background and thus allows us to carry forth the values of freedom, democracy and human rights.

Our answers couldn’t possibly be exhaustive in such a limited space, but we encourage you to explore these pages and to get back to us with your feedback in order to help us further improve this website.
