﻿{"id":50,"date":"2022-10-28T11:53:06","date_gmt":"2022-10-28T09:53:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/delegazioneunesco.esteri.it\/litalia-e-lunesco\/"},"modified":"2026-03-02T15:19:44","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T14:19:44","slug":"litalia-e-lunesco","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/delegazioneunesco.esteri.it\/en\/litalia-e-lunesco\/","title":{"rendered":"Italy and Unesco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"100\" data-end=\"606\"><strong><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1BnW5TFEojcxiXmVGf-eTs80W6U0KzSw&amp;ehbc=2E312F&amp;noprof=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"100\" data-end=\"606\"><strong>Italy is among the most committed Member States in supporting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/\">UNESCO<\/a>\u2019s activities.<\/strong><br data-start=\"186\" data-end=\"189\" \/>Italy&#8217;s contribution to the Organization is significant both from an organizational and financial standpoint, and also relies on the work of a dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.it\/it\/\">National Commission<\/a>.<br data-start=\"362\" data-end=\"365\" \/>Our country is often present and plays a leading role in many of the bodies that guide UNESCO\u2019s strategies and actions, starting with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/executive-board\">Executive Board<\/a>. Moreover, Italy ranks second among the top global contributors to the UNESCO system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"608\" data-end=\"1072\">Italy\u2019s objectives within UNESCO largely coincide with those set out in the Millennium Declaration adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2000:<br data-start=\"760\" data-end=\"763\" \/>\u2013 promotion of universal primary education (<a href=\"https:\/\/digitallibrary.un.org\/record\/422015?ln=fr&amp;v=pdf\">EFA<\/a>);<br data-start=\"812\" data-end=\"815\" \/>\u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/gender-equality\/education\">equal access<\/a> to all levels of education;<br data-start=\"857\" data-end=\"860\" \/>\u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/tags\/environmental-ethics\">environmental and resource protection and ethics<\/a> (beginning with water resources);<br data-start=\"944\" data-end=\"947\" \/>\u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/tags\/aids\">fight against AIDS<\/a> and other major pandemics;<br data-start=\"994\" data-end=\"997\" \/>\u2013 universal access to new information and communication technologies (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/ifap\">IFA<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1074\" data-end=\"2123\">Italy\u2019s leadership is particularly recognized in the <strong data-start=\"1127\" data-end=\"1145\">Culture Sector<\/strong>, especially regarding the protection of cultural heritage in times of peace (see the <a href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/convention\/\">1972 Convention<\/a> on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, which established the <a href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/\">World Heritage List<\/a>\u2014where Italy traditionally holds the top spot for number of sites; the 2003 Convention for the <a href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/\">Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage<\/a>; and the 2005 Convention on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/creativity\/en\/2005-convention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions<\/a>), as well as in cases of illicit actions (see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/legal-affairs\/convention-protection-cultural-property-event-armed-conflict-regulations-execution-convention\">1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict<\/a> and its two Protocols\u20141954 and 1999; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/fight-illicit-trafficking\/about\">1970 Paris Convention<\/a> on Measures to Prohibit and Prevent the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property, complemented by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unidroit.org\/fr\/instruments\/biens-culturels\/convention-de-1995\/\">1995 UNIDROIT Convention<\/a> on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects; and finally, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/underwater-heritage\/2001-convention\">2001 Paris Convention<\/a> on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage against acts of piracy).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2125\" data-end=\"2354\">In this sector, the operational work of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cultura.gov.it\/sue-sistema-informativo-degli-uffici-esportazione\">Ministry of Culture<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aics.gov.it\/?lang=en\">Italian Cooperation<\/a> is especially appreciated, along with the training activities of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carabinieri.it\/chi-siamo\/oggi\/organizzazione\/mobile-e-speciale\/comando-carabinieri-per-la-tutela-del-patrimonio-culturale\">Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2356\" data-end=\"2548\">Italy has signed and ratified nearly all international <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/countries\/it\">Conventions<\/a> promoted under UNESCO\u2019s framework and actively participates in many of them through regular presence in the governing bodies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2550\" data-end=\"3236\">In the <strong data-start=\"2557\" data-end=\"2578\">scientific sector<\/strong>, UNESCO operates in the fields of oceanography (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ioc.unesco.org\/en\">IOC<\/a>), hydrology (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/ihp\">IHP<\/a>), biosphere (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/mab\">MAB<\/a>), bioethics, and the fight against global health emergencies (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/tags\/aids\">AIDS<\/a>). Recently, sport and anti-doping activities have also been included (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/convention-against-doping-sport\">Convention Against Doping in Sport<\/a>). Italy takes an active part in the intergovernmental committees through which UNESCO operates in these sectors, also through national committees: the National MAB Committee and the National Committee for the International Hydrological Programme (coordinated by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minambiente.it\/home_it\/menu.html?mp=\/menu\/menu_ministero\/&amp;m=Direzioni_Generali.html|Direzione_generale_per_la_protezione_del.html\">Ministry for the Environment<\/a>), and the <a href=\"https:\/\/dta.cnr.it\/project\/coi-commissione-oceanografica-italiana\/\">Italian Oceanographic Commission<\/a> (coordinated by the National Research Council &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnr.it\/\">CNR<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3238\" data-end=\"3970\"><strong data-start=\"3238\" data-end=\"3329\">The UNESCO Regional Office for Science and Culture in Europe \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/new\/en\/venice\/home\/\">BRESCE<\/a> (based in Venice)<\/strong><br data-start=\"3329\" data-end=\"3332\" \/>The Venice Regional Office is hosted and substantially funded by Italy. Its purpose is to support and assist countries in Central and Eastern Europe, with a particular focus on South-East Europe (SEE).<br data-start=\"3533\" data-end=\"3536\" \/>In the cultural field, the office prioritizes safeguarding and restoring artistic heritage damaged by conflict in the Balkan region, especially through on-site training of experts and operators.<br data-start=\"3730\" data-end=\"3733\" \/>In the scientific field, priority is given to activities related to environmental protection and water resource management.
